Hello and good evening fellow citizens, my name is James Monroe and I am running for the Democratic-Republican Party in the election of 1816. I am speaking today about women in politics. Women should participate in politics because women have a different point of view and their opinions should be valued as equal to men’s. Men should not be the only ones to have a voice in your households. My opponent Rufus King and the rest of the Federalist Party are running out of steam. “Indications suggested that men may not be the best individuals to disseminate the new ideal.” (Zagarri, 125). This is because they are hiding the fact that the Federalists are not letting women be heard in the democratic process that our fathers and we fought so valiantly for less than fifty years ago. The last thing that this country needs is the start of another war.

The difference between fighting for “no taxation without representation” and denying half of our household’s suffrage rights is nominal. If we continue to refuse women the ability to have their voices heard in our unique democratic process, then we have already lost the basis of our nation. “Women, on the other hand, might be better positioned than men to inculcate the new liberal attitude toward party politics.” (Zagarri, 125). “Women might be able to ease the tensions between male partisans and instill the new liberal attitude toward party politics in their husbands and children.” (Zagarri, 126). Men and women should be able to have a say in the issues that affect them both equally. If your family believes that something is wrong then you should have the ability to change that. “Woman’s kindness of heart, would restrain ‘political and polemical disputation within the limits of decency and propriety: local contentions could be charmed away, and men might be softened down into beings altogether better fitted for the great purposes of life.” (Zagarri, 130). It is not necessary for women to have to speak through their spouses to be heard in society. It is our turn to take over and make changes for the good of our people and more importantly for women.

Candidate: Hi! I’m Bub Vanhoose the second! If you’re a woman … this message is for you!

Are you tired of keeping your political opinions to yourself?

Are you sick of being the peacemaker between opposing men on Election Day? (Zagarri 131)

Do you dream of being treated equal with men?

If you answered yes to any of the previous questions, then Bub Vanhoose is the candidate you’ve been looking for!

Those other guys don’t care about your rights, the rights that you deserve! They want women to stay out of politics because y’all “aren’t educated enough to have opinions”.

Well I say the times they are a-changing!

Woman: But Bub, don’t you know that nearly eighty to ninety percent of all white women can read and write now? (Zagarri 51)

Candidate: Wow, citizen, you really know your stuff! Maybe you could teach our Republican friends a lesson or two about the literacy of women nowadays.

Candidate: As a strong advocate for women, I know that your rights include more than just those pertaining to politics.

That’s why I’ve made it my mission to ensure that one day women everywhere will be seen as equals with men. Not just in your political opinions, but in your public expression as well!

Woman: Bub, what do you mean “public expression”?

Candidate: its one thing to have your own opinion, citizen, but don’t you want your friends, family, and colleagues to know how you feel?

Woman: gee I don’t know. My husband always says that his political views are the right political views.

Candidate: and what do you have to say about his views, citizen?

Woman: well … I don’t always agree with them, but I could never tell him that.

Candidate: Public expression! If your own husband wont listen to what you have to say who will? (Zagarri 171)

Bub Vanhoose the second! A vote for Bub is a vote for the babes!

Hello, my name is Janet Liberty. I come to you today on behalf of the Federalist Party in this grand election year of 1816.  As a woman, I see the Federalist Party as the only political advocate for women’s rights today.  Our opponents, the Democratic - Republican Party, prefer that women stay as far away from politics as possible. They seem to believe that women cannot think or act on their own accord, but only under the guidance of man. “Passive Patriots” is what they like to think of women as.

The views of the Democratic - Republican Party are not equivalent to the ideals that this great nation was built upon during the battle for independence…. “liberty and justice for all”. The social- hierarchy that they envision does not include the rights of women nor does it allow any room for the advancement of women in any other role except a subsidiary to men. The only advancement that can be made from this is that of white males.

The Federalist Party recognizes the role that women have played in the birth and building of our nation. They consider women as active patriots for our country. The sacrifices and commitment that women made to the revolution did not go unnoticed by the Federalist, but rather praised and celebrated. Albeit the contributions different from women than that of men, each played a necessary role in regards to patriotism.

If by some ill misfortune that the Democratic-Republican party is victorious, the battle for the women’s rights shall be a mere whisper of the past. The Democratic - Republican Party will further extinguish voting rights for women.  Their masculine ideals of the world leave no room for free and forward thinking women with a voice. A democracy based on freedom for all is a mere joke if all free citizens aren’t allowed their chance to cast a vote to decide their fate.

When you cast your vote for this election, remember what we fought for some 40 odd years ago. Do we want to progress as a nation or continue to disregard the voice of the people.

Election of 1816: Women in the Forefront

Host:

“Welcome to W.I.P. Women in Politiics, where we are WhIPing women into shape to argue for their political beliefs.”

“We are asking women in the city how they feel about the Election of 1816 and women’s involvement in politics.”

“Today we will be speaking with Kathy”

“Hi, Kathy how do you feel about women participating in the election during this era?”

Kathy:

“ I feel that women are better off at home raising these boys and teaching them the right way to vote instead of trying to vote themselves. Women’s continuing involvement in politics intensified social tensions and deepened the split between Federalists and Republicans. (pg. 116- Revolutionary Backlash) I think women should keep their business at home keeping the peace vs. being out at the voting polls causing more problems.”

Host:

“That’s true Kathy, thank you for your time.”

“ Now we are going to talk with Adrienne”

“Hi Adrienne, so how do you feel about women in politics during this era”

Adrienne:

“ I feel that women should have the right to participate in any election they please. Their voices should be heard just as much as males. I believe my politics and my religion make just as much of an impact (pg. 120 Revolutionary Backlash) and I think women should hold both just as dear. We have more of a role in politics than just raising our boys to vote. We must teach them that mommies can vote too.”

Host:

“Well folks, looks like there’s still a divide in our political beliefs. But luckily now, women can choose which side to be on. Thanks for watching. Until next time!”

How I Met Your Mother Election of 1816

Ted: Kids have I ever told you the story of how I met your mother?

Kids: No!

Ted: It’s a great story kids. It all started during the Election of 1816 where James Monroe for the Democratic-Republican Party was running against Rufus King of the Federalist Party

FLASHBACK

Ted: I really don’t know who I’m going to vote for, do I vote for Rufus King and try to keep the Federalist Party alive or do I vote for James Monroe and keep the Virginia Dynasty in office

Friend: How do you not know who you are going to vote for when we are on the way to the vote? You better hurry up and decide

Woman: VOTE FOR JAMES MONROE! VOTE FOR JAMES MONROE!

Ted: Excuse me may I ask why you are campaigning for Monroe?

Woman: Of course. I am campaigning for James Monroe because women’s voices across America need to be heard and with James Monroe and the Democratic - Republican Party we have a better chance of making our opinion matter!

Ted: I didn’t know women’s opinions weren’t valued or heard much in politics

Woman: Yes our opinions are not valued as much as Men’s opinions in politics and if Rufus King is elected into office our opinions and values will continue to be ignored. James Monroe will help loosen voting rules for women so we can have the right to vote on who becomes President. Right now the only state women can vote in is New Jersey (pg. 47), and like Mary Wollstonecraft said “Given by God, these rights were universal, inherent in the condition of being human being, and they applied to all the people, regardless of sex.” (pg. 40)

Ted: Wow! I never knew women had such a problem having their opinions and voices being heard, I always thought they just did not care

Woman: We have cared for a long time and have been writing articles in newspapers trying to have our opinions voiced for a long time. Women want to be involved in politics and not just be known as female politicians but politicians equal to men and James Monroe can help get us there

Ted: Well that sure does make a good case for voting for James Monroe but I’m not sure I’m still 100% certain on who to vote for.

Woman: Another reason why you should vote for Monroe is because the Federalist Party is falling apart. They are the ones who opposed to War of 1812 (pg. 110-111)

Ted: How could you oppose the War of 1812 we needed to fend of the British again?

Woman: Exactly! Rufus King and the Federalist were against the War of 1812 and if the Federalist were in office we would probably be under the rule of the British once more. The Federalist Party is falling apart and if you care about protecting America and help giving Women the right to be involved in party politics and having our voices be heard throughout the nation Vote for James Monroe!

Ted: I’m definitely going to vote for James Monroe now!

By the way do you happen to be single?

Woman: Yes. Me and my husband divorced. He was a Federalist.

Back to the Present

Ted: And kids that is How I Met Your Mother

Dialogue for Video Project

Hi! I’m Annie. I love cooking and keeping house for my family. However, I believe that women should be able to participate in party politics. Many other women feel the same way. As of right now, our only rights are to take care of our husbands and teach our children. In addition to these rights we would like the right to a say in political issues. Women do not have any political freedom. James Monroe is running for the Democratic Republican Party and he will fight to give women the political rights they deserve. The other candidate, Rufus King, is for the federalist party. The Federalist Party says that us, women are not educated or fit to be participating in politics. As women, we do have an indirect effect on the 1816 election. You can participate by making food for events, wearing our party’s colors and symbols, and influencing your husbands. Our opinions are just as important as those of men. Women have the right to a say in political decisions that will effect them directly. Join me and many other women in the fight to get James Monroe elected. Hi. I’m James Monroe and I approve this message. I promise to give women the political rights they deserve. I humbly ask for your vote on November 4th.

The Election of 1816

Rufus King: I am Rufus King of the Federalist Party and I am campaigning for the Election of 1816. I am in opposition to slavery and did not support the efforts for the War of 1812 (p.100). I would like to personally address the allegations of me owing money to the government and tell everyone that they are not true. It should also be known that I am a strong supporter of women rights, and foresee that both women and their support will be vital in the future of our nation.

Woman 1: The Republicans are causing political turmoil in our nation and trying to destroy our social order, which is portrayed by Madame Genlis. She is being praised because she claims to have instilled the proper revolutionary order in her children, family and friends. She believes that birth is accidental and that there is a large hereditary distinction and there are only certain things which a good man can deem certain, those are his knowledge and his virtue. She is an obvious threat to our existing social order and her actions continue to lead us to turmoil. We are in need of loyal federalist supports to help prevent such actions. (p.105)

Rufus King: In the Republican party, they celebrate women who promote the ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity like Madame Genlis displays. However, one must see this is likely to destroy our social order!! It is important we act now to prevent future generations from instilling such ideals to their children and their children’s children. (105)

Women 2: The Republican viewpoints in the journals and newspapers do not depict our ideas and true thoughts. They are lies that are constantly spreading throughout the streets. For example, Federalists make fun of our fashion in aim to score political party points and constantly mock our campaign strategy. And once quoted that, “Republicans were nothing more than frivolous women who changed governments as carelessly as women changed fashion” (108 ). However, I assure these allegations are false.

Rufus: In regard to my stance on opposition to war, I had the women’s best interest in mind. I was thinking of the helpless innocence of women and children, who would take care of them while the men are overseas? It is not my lack of patriotism, but my interest in making sure that the women are cared for and valued in our society. The Republicans clearly do not have the women in their best interests (109-110).

As you the people can see, there are clearly two very different standpoints on the subject: The Federalist and the Republican. However, if you are looking to help move America forward, support women and their rights and have a strong desire to continue building a well-structured powerful nation, then the choice should be clear. Steer clear of the Republicans and their destructive ideals, as they should be feared. One must keep in mind to be skeptical of the Republicans and their media claims as they falsely portray our Federalist heroines as villains. I hope you all can see the truth for what it is and do not allow the Republicans skew the nations beliefs on Federalism through their published journals and visual imagery. Do not waste your vote this election and make it count! Please vote for me, Federalist, Rufus King. Thank-you all for your time and support! I look forward to bettering our nation everyday.

Video Project Script: Rufus King Campaign Video (Federalist Party)

-Hi, I’m former New York Senator Rufus King and I want to be your next president of the United States.

-I will be representing the Federalist party in this years upcoming election. If I am elected to be your next president, I promise I will lead this great nation in the right direction and help it progress towards a brighter future for all Americans.

-The first step in my plan for a brighter future and forward thinking nation is welcoming political input from all Americans including men and women alike.

-Our country is filled with bright intelligent women who deserve to be involved in making political decisions and we stand to gain a great deal as a nation by listening to what they have to say. By listening to the views of every American citizen, we can create a government that reflects the ideologies of more Americans, and ensure that we remain a nation that everyone can be proud to live in.

-The next step towards a brighter future is mending our poor relationship with Great Britain. Great Britain has successfully remained a dominant world power for many years and share much of the same ideology as us.

It is in our nation’s best interest to remain close allies with them economically, and politically. In the future they will prove to be one of our most important trade partners, and a crucial ally in future conflicts with their advanced forces and experienced veterans.

-My last order of business will be to ensure that everyone living within our great nation can have the freedom they deserve, and have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, as it was promised by our founding fathers. Every American deserves these rights, no matter their gender or race, which is why a brighter future for the United States includes the freeing of all slaves and treating every human being equally.

-With a vote for me, Senator Rufus King, for your next President of the United States, you are voting for a brighter future. With me in office, our economic and political future will be safe. With me in office, we can become a more forward thinking nation that respects the rights and opinions of every American citizen, no matter their gender or race.

-So vote for me, Senator Rufus King, for a brighter future.

It’s YOUR Election Too

Introduction Music

Rufus King: Ladies, as you may know we are in the midst of the election of the century. The rogue Democratic Republicans want to destroy all the things we have worked so hard to build. But the time is never too late to act! We need your help in defeating these sadistic scofflaws, and returning our country to its patriotic ideals! The Federalist’s party needs you, our beloved Ladies, to create wonderful barbeques and bake election cakes for supporters of the Federalists cause. If we can come together and do this, then we can save this country from the wrath of the Democratic Republicans. I would now like to introduce Catherine Maria Sedgwick, daughter of Theodore Sedgwick, and renowned author, who will talk to you about what you can do for the Federalist effort.

Catherine Maria Sedgwick: My fellow ladies. The time has come for us to help the patriotic cause more than ever. Thomas Jefferson has called women to remain in homes and not bother with politics, and has even made a movement to deny postmistresses from fulfilling out their husbands duties, but this is all Democratic Republican propaganda. Us women need to take action in politics, not for our fame or praise, but for the sake of patriotism and country. I urge all of you to host the greatest barbeques and parties celebrating the movement for OUR Federalist cause. But the action does not stop at parties and cookouts. The Federalist cause needs you to be our voice inside the home. Teach your children about the importance of federalism and patriotism. Converse with your husband about what he has done to support the Federalist cause and ultimately his country, in an effort to motivate him to go vote and support the Federalist party and ultimately patriotism.

Rufus King: Ladies, at this time we hope that you remember what is important to you and your family. We hope that the ideals of patriotism ring true from now until the election. We look forward to seeing your support and your husbands at the poles.

Closing Music

During this, the 1816 election. Our candidates must decide many things on many topics. Such as war with Britain, helping our native American allies, and even the topic of women’s rights have come into play.

These topics are very deep, and require a man who knows what he is talking about. So this election, vote James Madison. He is a Democratic Republican who knows exactly what you want.

He knows you want to go to war, and spill more blood against the British. Because that was fun the first time, right? He knows that we don’t like Indians here, and pretty much every President after him will agree with him. He also knows exactly what to do with women in politics. Invite them to our rallies. And then give them no political standing whatsoever.

So vote James Madison, because really, we all know nothing good can come from a guy with the last name Clinton in the White House.
