DIALOG FOR SHOT UNTIL YOU DROP

Steve Harvey –Hey, Im Steve Harvey the host and this is SHOTS UNTIL YOU DROP. On my right it’s a federalist out of New York, Mr. Rufus King and his beautiful wife Mary King. To my left is a Democratic- Republican James Monroe from Virginia. In this game the party that makes the most point, doesn’t have to take a shot. Best out of 3 so goodluck.

Round 1

Steve Harvey- Do you believe women should have the right to vote?

Mr.King- No, I don’t think they should because I think this a man’s world. Men should put their foot down. The natural rights law established by the creater, extends over the whole globe, everywhere and at all times binding upon man kind. This is a law of God by which he makes his way known and is paramount to all human control. (Monroe)

Mr. Monroe- Well, I think everyone should have the right to vote. Stated under the United States Constitution, we as Americans have natural rights and voting should be a right. Since women live in America as well and is more than have the population. They should be treated equally.

Mr. Harvey- I give this round to Mr. Monroe under the constitution it does state we should be equal and have natural rights.

Round 2

Mr. Harvey- Mr. King you have to win this round or the game is over. Since this is about politics. My question, why shouldn’t women have a say so in politics? If you think they should, state otherwise?

Mr. King- I just don’t think they should have a say so. Women are too emotional. They should cook, clean, and watch over our kids. Their opinion doesn’t matter unless its what’s on the menu. HAHA.

Mr. Mary King (Rufus King wife) – ( Slaps Mr. King and walks off)

Monroe Speaks- Haha. Thank you Mrs. King, he needed that. I believe the women opinion in politics are very important. Who say women shouldn’t have a voice when it comes to who control their country as well. Behind every great man, is a great woman? They are our backbone.

Mr. king- Well this sucks. (takes last shot and passes out)

Mr. Harvey- And the winner still standing, democratic republican out of Virginia James Monroe.

NOTES: The italicized writing is what Mr. King really said. It’s a well known quote.

Mary is Mr. Kings wife real name.

Script Dialogue:

Tammy- Mary, how do you feel about your husband running for a spot in office?

Mary- I am very proud and supportive of my husband, however, I am very upset that I am not able to have a bigger role in this election because I am just as passionate about politics as my husband. I find it very insulting that men think that all women are up to no good with “our distinctive feminine charms, [and that] our sexual powers will subvert the political process” (Zagarri, 127).

Suzzi- Yes Mary that is very frustrating but women are still very politically powerful in the way that they can “instill moral values and inspire virtuous behavior in their husbands and children” (Zagarri, 125). You can be involved in politics, which is better than nothing!

Tammy- Yes, I understand that us women being in coverture by our fathers then later on our husbands is very demeaning, but despite being overlooked by the government women are still working their hardest to have a say in politics which is very amazing.

Suzzi- And especially being advocates of the democratic republican party, us as women are “particularly important under a republican form of government where the people govern themselves” (Zagarri, 128). Us democratic republican women's “actions resemble those of [our] revolutionary predecessors” (Zagarri, 99) showing that we stick with our traditional important roots unlike the federalist women.

Tammy- Yeah those Federalist women who wear the eagle pins are no where near as involved in politics as we democratic republicans. “Federalist women do not feel the need to be patriotic do gooders” (Zagarri, 100) in this very important election of 1812.

Mary- I am proud to be a wife of a democratic republican but I am still very fed up with the fact that women are getting more and more politically invisible (Zagarri, 181) as the years go by. Doesn't that bother you guys too, especially during this election?

Suzzi- Don't worry Mary, us women “express our commitment to the common good with our role as social reformers” (Zagarri, 142).

Host Mr. P. Westchester

Hello Ladies and Gentleman,

Thank you all for attending this Democratic-Republic Presidency campaign dinner here in the great state of Virginia. With that being said the man I am about to introduce is a man that needs no introduction here as many of you already know him for his valiant actions for our country during the Revolution! (Cheers from the crowd!) Now without further a due Mr. James Monroe! (Applause).

James Monroe:

Hello Ladies and Gentleman,

First thank you all for coming out on this fine Virginia evening to celebrate my campaign to be your next President of the United States. (Pause for applause). Now instead of me talking politics and agendas to help lead our young nation into the future, there is one objective I would like to speak tonight which would be an important role to be played in this campaign by the ladies here tonight and all across our great nation. What I am talking about is the devotion and strength a woman has to offer. I know this first hand what it feels like to receive tremendous and unconditional love and support from my beautiful and charming wife, Elizabeth Monroe, who has been by my side throughout my career. Now let me entrance you in a story of my time spent as Minister to France, for our fair country. Trying to establish diplomatic relations with a country that is going through its own revolution created much adversity, as I learned of a Frenchmen who served in our own Revolution was imprisoned. Gaining recognition and respect for our young country without over stepping boundaries during a fragile time was tough in itself. However, I took it upon myself to gain the freedom for the French man named Marquis de Lafayette, who I learned served under the General, President George Washington. While working for this man’s freedom, I learned that his wife had also been imprisoned. As I tried to comprehend how a country could sentence a woman to prison for the actions of her husband, it dawned on me that it must have been the woman’s own actions that sealed her own fate. For I believe a man who fights not only for his rights but also for the rights of others must have a wife willing to do the same. While I worked feverishly to gain the freedom of Mr. Lafayette; my wife Elizabeth, a very well educated and respected individual herself, insisted upon herself to fight for the freedom of Mrs. Lafayette, a woman whom she had never met before, in which she succeeded. Now the reason I told this story was not to boast about my dear wife or her selfless act of kindness, instead, to tell of the impact and influence a well-educated woman can make. I have learned from my travels overseas that the world is changing and that in order for our great nation to keep striding forward is to keep advancing in education for not just men but for women as well. In all I would like to encourage women to pursue an education and make herself aware in politics and other world affairs. A great start to that is getting yourselves involved in this upcoming campaign! Let us all stand together now and say no to The Federalist Party and their old traditional ways that will hinder us in achieving the greatness! Thank you and God bless you all!

• James Monroe-The Federalists are on the ropes! This election is their final gasp for relevancy, help us to stomp out the last of the weak, cowardly, anti-states’ rights elements in government!
• James Monroe- Party politics have separated us, permeating our entire lives. It is time for us to all unify under the banner of the Democratic-Republican party, time for us to stand as one nation! (pg. 116)
• James Monroe - The Federalists may claim to be honored by the presence of the fair sex at their events, but we have their support. (pg.85)
• James Monroe- Our Republican Women, like their revolutionary forbears supported the growth of this great nation in the trying days during the War of 1812. (pg.100)
• A South Carolina Federalist magazine has said of us. “Incessantly laboring, by every artifice, and with the most unblushing audacity, to turn [women] over, as poor, wretched forlorn victims,- to shame, and remorse, and anguish, and tribulation, and barren sorrow, and irretrievable destitution.” (pg. 111)
• This attack ad placed by the Federalists is a desperate attempt to try and gain female sympathy, as that is all they have left. They say we defile and defame women, that is their duty to rescue them, but in doing imply something just as worrying, that women need to be saved at all. (pg.111)
• The Federalists are nothing but two faced liars, as they have run many political cartoons casting these same women as licentious whores. Federalists believe that your liberty is nothing more than a function of licentious behavior, which leads to riots and anarchy. (pg.111)(purposely going from attacking the Federalists to attacking women, showing the irony of the situation)
• Federalists are the whores of Great Britian! (pg.112) They dream of a nationalistic government that they can then turn into the new monarchy!
• Men do not let women take your ability to make choices away!
• They are actively seeking to supplant you. Your wife is working in her best interests, not yours! (pg.113)
• DO NOT LET THIS HAPPEN! Women are the fairer sex for a reason, she is incapable of political thought, easily manipulated, unable to perform necessary political actions. We must keep them from making this mistake.
• Remember men, on election day, vote with your party, not your wife.

SCRIPT:

Women’s participation in party politics from the perspective of a Federalist candidate

We used this quote as a theme for our campaign advertisement: “Like the water that fish swim in, women’s influence was omnipresent but transparent, invisible to the naked eye” p. 125

Characters:

F: Federalist candidate

A: Audience member asking questions

Addressing the people:

F: Today, I want to voice the importance in the role that women play in in party politics.

As a federalist candidate, we tend to “…depict women as active patriots who vigorously embraced their political role” p.159

A: But if women can’t vote, how are they involved?

F: “Women were asked to use their influence not simply to affect men’s manners or morals but also for explicitly political purposes. Women might be able to ease the tensions between male partisans and instill new liberal attitude toward party politics in their husbands and children” p.128-29

“Women, despite their lack of formal political power, could exert a significant influence over society and politics” p.125

“Women exerted their influence indirectly, they nonetheless were thought to shape their families’ ideas, values, and behavior” p.126

“Women could be as crucial to the republic’s success as men” p.128

A: What is the Federalist attitude toward women compared to the Republicans?

F: “Federalists could afford to be gracious to women because they knew who their women were: maids and matrons of the respectable classes” p. 160

“Over time, the disappearance of the federalists from the political scene and the triumph of the republican party further eroded women’s presence in electoral politics. “ p.159

With this being said, women are just as vital to party politics as men, and as a member of the Federalist Party, it is important to recognize their contributions to society.

SCRIPT:

The future of America, who will be the next?

From 1801 to the present,

Democratic republican has taken the office for 6 years.

Let this be continued…

Vote Democratic Republic for a beautiful future.

James, James, James.

James Monroe is you best choice.

Women, let’s stand up to do what you had done during the American Revolution and The war of 1812. And play your important role to show the power of female politicians. (6-7)

As men’s friends and companions, women gained dignity, respect, and equality. In this republic country where people governed themselves, women could shape the values and ideals of populace as well. (19) Call your husband and son to vote for Democratic Republic. Let them be part of us.

And you join our party organization to work for the best Democratic Republic.

Like Esther DeBerdt Reed said, “American women were born for liberty.” (25)

Let’s break up the society’s custom and tradition. Believing what Hannah Lee Corbin believed, “as taxpaying women, we all have political rights.” (29)

Please attending our meetings, gatherings, and events, wearing liberty cap which is the symbol of freedom, or even bring your food to us if you want to. (84-86) Do not be afraid of challenging your family’s political views, and be willing to change their views if they are not part of us yet. (92) We will make shirts, socks, and beddings. We will also go to the street to collect money for the Democratic Republic Party. (99) Be a heroine to the Democratic Republic and a villainess to the Federalists. (103)

Federalists only want to get benefits from the women, and they look at female politicians who contributed to the country as a threat to the existing social order.

But Democratic Republic could bring changes of administration to every government and every age. We want the republic principles to beat over aristocracy and corruption, and we support women who promoted the ideals of liberty and equality. (36, 94, 105)

Trust yourself, you will be the next Dolley Madison. And because of your support, Democratic Republic will win!
